Korean Sloppy Joes

We love burgers and sloppy joes but I hadn't fixed the latter in a long long time. I was going through my recipe list and looking at previous post. Like the yummy original homemade Sloppy Joes or the even better Philly Cheese-steak Sloppy Joes . Then I thought, what can I do to make another version?
Asian sloppy Joes...how about Korean? YES!
Now I must add, that it was delicious but would have been better with a slaw on top. Which I plan to add next time. Something like: (minus the chicken) Clean Asian Slaw
My son and I really enjoyed them, my husband said it was okay at first but the more he ate of his "joe" the more he enjoyed it. For the record, he's not a fan of sesame oil or sriracha.
Korean Sloppy Joes
1 lb ground beef
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp sesame oil
1/2 cup ketchup, I used all natural no sugar added
1/2 cup hoisin 
1/2 cup water
2 TBSP low sodium soy sauce
1 TBSP rice wine vinegar (important! not regular vinegar)
1/2 tsp sriracha (or another type of Asian hot sauce)
4-6 buns (optional toasting)

In a large non stick skillet cook the meat, break it down and cook until nice and brown. Add the garlic, hoisin, sesame oil, ketchup, water, soy sauce, vinegar and sriracha together. stir well and cook until the sauce begins to thicken. IF you want yours drier, not as sloppy, cook until thick and moist. If you want it sloppy, just as it starts to thicken, turn off the heat and allow it to sit for a few.
This is sweet, hot, sticky, messy and just the right amount of Umami.

  1. I think I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't like Sloppy Joes. It's that I don't like wet bread. I do make them though because my family likes them and I could definitely make these and just serve mine over rice.

    1. I don't make mine so sloppy that the bread is soggy. I don't like that either. My mom serves hers open faced and eats it with a fork. She doesn't like stuff on her hands.
